Microsoft says the decision to delay PS5 players’ access to the AAA title, which has so far garnered rave reviews, was down to ensuring Xbox owners have a great experience from the get-go. It called it a “production decision” rather than one based on old-fashioned console policy and the potential to boost Xbox sales ahead of the busy Christmas period.
“We’re largely making [exclusivity and windowing] decisions on a whatsapp number list game-by-game basis,” Matt Booty, Microsoft’s president of game studios and content, told Variety .
“And each of our studios is in a slightly different position. There’s also the production schedule of a game, so the decision about spacing comes first.
“We want to make sure that there’s a great experience for our Xbox players, and then the gap between [when it becomes available on PlayStation] is as much a production decision as anything else. This is a game that was in production even before we acquired Bethesda.”
This year alone, Microsoft has extended the wealth of its first-party exclusives with games like Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, and Pentiment crossing the great console divide.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is available outside of Pass Ultimate subscription, which lets you stream games from the cloud without the need for source hardware. PS5 owners can therefore play it, but not on their console. A modern Samsung TV or Amazon Fire TV stick will suffice.
