6 Methods for Calculating Engagement Rate
These are the most commonly used formulas for calculating social media engagement rate.
1. Engagement Rate per Reach (ERR): Most commonly used
This formula is the most commonly used to calculate the engagement generated by a social media post.
TE reach measures the percentage of users who chose to interact with your content after viewing it.
Use the first formula for a single post, and the second to calculate the average rate across multiple posts.
TE reach = total number of engagements per post / reach per post * 100
To calculate the average, add up all the TE reach of the posts you want to know the average for, and divide by the number of posts:
Average TE reach = Total TE reach / Total number of publications
In other words: Publication 1 (3.4%) + Publication 2 (3.5%) / 2 = 3.45%.
Pros: Reach can be a more accurate metric than follower count, as not all of your followers see all of your content. People who don't follow you may have discovered your posts through shares, hashtags, or other means.
Cons: Reach can fluctuate for many reasons, making it another variable to control. Keep in mind that very low reach can lead to an excessively high engagement rate, and vice versa.
2. Engagement rate per post (ERP): most suitable for specific posts
Technically, this formula measures follower engagement on a specific post. In other words, it's similar to TE reach, except that instead of reach, it tells you the percentage of followers who interact with your content.
Most social media influencers calculate their average engagement rate this way.
TE publication = Total number of engagements on a publication / Total number of followers *100
To calculate the average, add up all the TE publications you want to average, and divide the result by the total number of publications:
Average TE per publication = Total TE per publication / Total number of publications
Example: Publication 1 (4.0%) + Publication 2 (3.0%) / 2 = 3.5%.
Pros: While TE reach is a better way to measure engagement (since it's based on how many people saw your post), this formula replaces reach with a much more stable metric: followers.
In other words, if your reach changes often, you should use this method to get a more accurate measure of the engagement each individual post receives.
Cons: As mentioned, while this formula is a more reliable way to track the interactions your posts get, it doesn't necessarily provide a complete picture, as it doesn't account for viral reach. Additionally, as your follower count grows, your engagement rate may drop slightly.
